What does IEC 62745 require for wireless remote controls?
IEC/EN 62745:2017 (+A11:2020) is a Type-B2 standard defining the requirements for wireless control systems of machinery; it covers in particular portable control stations carried by the operator. It is applied in addition to IEC 60204-1. It does not specify the communication protocol, the frequency band, or EMC and IP protection requirements.
What the standard is concerned with is not how the radio link works but what must happen in which circumstances. Its headings are as follows:
- Prevention of unintended operation — dropping the device, pressing a button by accident, or a corrupted packet being taken for a command must not start motion.
- Prevention of unauthorised use — each transmitter-receiver pair must be uniquely identified, and a foreign transmitter must not drive the machine.
- Serial data integrity and error detection — corrupted data must not be processed as a valid command.
- Establishment, indication and loss of communication — the state of the link must be apparent to the operator, and in the event of loss the system must go to the safe state.
- Behaviour on loss of supply — when the transmitter or receiver supply is cut, a defined and safe outcome must result.
The standard is Type-B2; it relates to a particular kind of safety component and is applied together with the machine's own Type-C standard. For hoisting machines EN IEC 60204-32, and for crane control devices EN 13557, form the complementary framework.
