EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility)
A device not emitting interference above acceptable limits into its surroundings, and continuing to perform its function under the interference around it. It is a two-way concept: emission and immunity. On radio equipment, electromagnetic compatibility is among the essential requirements of the directive.
A crane panel is a demanding environment in terms of electromagnetic compatibility: inverters produce broadband noise because of their fast switching, contactors arc at the moment of interruption, and welding machines create pulsed, broad-spectrum disturbance.
The measures that pay off most during installation:
- Running power and control cables along separate routes, leaving at least approximately 20 cm between them, and making unavoidable crossings at right angles.
- Using shielded cable on the motor cable; earthing the shield at both ends for high-frequency noise.
- Using a line filter at the inverter input and output, and ferrite rings on sensitive control cables.
- Applying an arc suppression element on contactor coils and a freewheeling diode on direct current coils.
The most effective and cheapest measure is distance: moving the receiver and the antenna away from the inverter, the welding machine and the motor cable solves most intermittent response complaints on its own.
