What happens if I connect the lift retrofit kit with reversed polarity?
A reversed polarity connection carries a serious risk of damage. Since the LFT20 has no board, processor or sensor, there is no protection circuit and the motor can run the wrong way and strain the mechanism; the product is also sold outside warranty coverage. The LFT54 has a control board embedded in the motor, but reversed polarity is not a normal operating condition on any product. The red wire goes to the positive terminal and the black wire to the negative.
Apply these steps to avoid the mistake:
- Do the wiring de-energised. Disconnect the battery negative terminal, complete all connections, and reconnect it last.
- Verify the colour code. Red means positive, black means negative. Do not trust wiring already run on the tractor; measure it with a multimeter.
- Confirm negative chassis. Modern tractors are 12V negative chassis, meaning the battery negative terminal is bonded to the body. You should read about 12.6 V between the chassis and the positive line.
- LFT20 bench test. This test already lets you check the polarity is correct; the red wire is touched to the battery positive and the black wire to the negative.
If you suspect a reversed connection and the kit does not work, do not keep trying it over and over. Disconnect it, check the fuse, measure the polarity and report the situation to technical support. Show the same care about polarity when connecting a jump-start battery.
