IEC / EN 62745 (Wireless Control Systems)
The standard that sets out the functional and interface requirements for wireless control systems of machinery; it targets in particular portable control stations carried by the operator. It does not specify the communication protocol, the frequency band, or EMC and IP protection requirements; those are the subject of other standards.
The standard is applied in addition to the basic standard that gives the general requirements for the electrical equipment of machinery. That is, everything required on a wired machine remains valid; the additional risks introduced by being wireless are covered by this standard.
The main subjects it covers:
- Prevention of unintended operation.
- Prevention of unauthorised use.
- Serial data integrity and error detection.
- Establishment, indication and loss of communication.
- Behaviour in the event of loss of supply.
A common mistake is to think the standard prescribes a particular frequency or range. The standard is silent on these matters; the radio side is the domain of radio regulations, and protection class that of the IP standard. Since no declaration of conformity appears in the product data for the AXI ST and SF sets, do not attach a claim of conformity with this standard to the product; establish the conformity of your machine through your own risk assessment and supplier documentation.
