Hose Burst Valve
A hose burst valve is a safety element threaded directly into the cylinder port that holds the load in place if the line fails. Under normal operation flow passes freely; the valve closes when flow rises suddenly and abnormally. It is a common requirement on mobile lifting equipment.
The operating principle is based on a flow differential. When the amount of oil leaving the cylinder exceeds the threshold the valve is calibrated to, the spring-loaded poppet closes and the load is locked. The threshold is set above the machine's normal maximum lowering flow rate; if set too low, the valve will close needlessly during fast but normal movements.
- Mounting requirement: no hose may be placed between the valve and the cylinder. Every hose inserted in between creates an unprotected zone.
- Testing: function can only be verified with a controlled line-cut trial; visual inspection is not enough.
- Difference: unlike a load holding valve, it does not prevent slow drift caused by leakage; it only reacts to sudden flow.
Switching to electronic lever control does not change this valve's function and does not replace it. The remote control's 250 ms signal loss protection moves the motor to a safe center position and stops oil flow; but if the line has physically failed, what holds the load is this valve on the hydraulic side.
