Where should I connect the negative in a negative ground system?
In a 12/24 V negative ground system, connect the negative to a main chassis point cleaned of paint and rust that offers a low resistance path directly to the battery negative. The difference measured under load between the battery negative and the device negative must stay below 0.2 V, and below 0.05 V on an ideal chassis path. With sensitive electronics the safest option is running the negative directly from the battery.
Where the negative is connected is as decisive as the cross-section of the positive. All the return current passes along this path; if the path is resistive, the device supply voltage collapses the moment load comes on and the fault picture becomes completely misleading.
- Order of preference: directly to the battery negative terminal > the main chassis collection point > the nearest bolt. Not a random sheet metal bolt.
- Surface preparation: paint, e-coat and rust are not conductive. Clean until the metal shines, use a serrated or toothed washer, then seal with a protective coating.
- Type of connection: use a crimped lug on a vibrating vehicle; on a stranded conductor, solder creates a stiff-to-flexible transition where the solder ends and the conductor fatigues and breaks there.
- Verification: while the device is drawing load, put the multimeter probes on the battery negative and the device negative. Below 0.2 V is good, 0.2-0.5 V must be cleaned, above 0.5 V means a fault.
If another high-current load (crane motor, starter) is connected to the same chassis point, separate the negative of the sensitive remote control; the voltage dropped across the common impedance shifts the signal reference.
