What is passive stop in wireless remote controls?
Passive stop is the system going to a safe state on its own, without the remote having to issue an active command: if the signal is lost, the battery dies, the transmitter goes out of range or an internal fault is detected, the receiver de-energizes its outputs and the machine stops. EN 13557, which covers crane controls, defines this behavior and expects the timeout not to exceed 1.5 seconds by default.
There are two distinct stopping concepts in wireless remote control. Active stop is the operator deliberately pressing a button. Passive stop is the system going to a safe state on its own when no command arrives.
Typical events that trigger passive stop:
- Loss of the radio link.
- Depletion of the transmitter battery.
- The transmitter going out of range.
- The system detecting its own internal fault.
EN 13557 is a standard covering the control systems of cranes and hoists, and it contains specific requirements for wireless remote controls. Under this standard the timeout is expected to be adjustable and its default value not to exceed 1.5 seconds; fixed values of 5 seconds and above are not accepted.
This information is a general engineering framework. The signal loss behavior of the HCT400 and HCT402 is a 250 ms timeout, and this value stays markedly below the upper limit expected in the industry.
