What electrical requirements does EN 60204-32 set for lifting machines?
EN IEC 60204-32 deals with the electrical and electronic equipment of lifting machines up to 1000 V AC / 1500 V DC and at frequencies not exceeding 200 Hz. The scope starts at the supply disconnector; overhead, tower, mobile, portal and floating cranes, hoists, monorails and storage and retrieval systems are included.
The standard is part 32 of the IEC 60204 series, specific to lifting machines. It adapts the general machine electrics rules to the reality of cranes.
The main headings it contains:
- Control circuits and control functions; supply, isolation and protection arrangements.
- Safety-related functions and their behaviour under fault conditions.
- Interlocks — the electrical interlock that prevents the forward/reverse contactors from pulling in at the same time is within this scope.
- Emergency stop arrangements and stop categories.
- Operator interface devices.
In Turkey it has been published as TS EN 60204-32. The 2008 edition has been superseded by the current EN IEC 60204-32:2025 edition.
In a practical installation the reflections of this standard you meet most often are these: the limit switch going in series into the power circuit independently of the radio link, mechanical and electrical interlocking existing between the direction contactors, the receiver supply being suitably protected, and the whole circuit from the machine supply disconnector onwards being documented.
