What does the response (drop rate) lever do?
The response lever adjusts only the lowering speed of the three-point hitch, it does not affect the lifting speed. It is effective in both draft and position control; when restricted the implement lowers slowly and under control, when fully open it drops fast. With heavy implements, restricting the lever protects both the implement and the hitch joints from shock.
The response lever is in fact a lowering flow restrictor. As the hitch lowers, it limits the flow rate of oil from the cylinder to the return line. Since lifting happens with the flow coming from the pump, this lever does not change the lifting speed.
Practical use:
- For heavy implements (plough, heavy harrow) restrict the lever; if a released implement drops under its own weight, the lower links, pins and the implement frame take a shock.
- For light implements and jobs with frequent headland turns, leaving it more open saves time.
- If the lever is fully closed the hitch does not lower at all or lowers very slowly; this is the common and simple cause of the "the links won't come down" complaint.
When you fit an electronic retrofit kit this lever stays in place and keeps its function. The kit issues the lift/lower command; how smooth the lowering will be is still set by the response adjustment. If lowering feels too harsh with the kit, check this lever before the electronics.
