What does a DC-DC charger add to a levelling system?
A DC-DC charger converts the voltage coming from the alternator while the vehicle is running into a charge profile suited to the chemistry of the service battery. This way the service battery really does fill up during the journey and the full voltage and current needed for levelling are ready when you arrive at the campsite. The 12V DC jacks of the KTS200 move as designed only when the battery is close to full capacity.
In simple split-charge arrangements that connect the alternator directly to the service battery, the battery usually does not fill completely: the alternator voltage stays at a fixed point, drops over a long cable run and the battery lives chronically half charged. For lead-acid and AGM batteries this means both capacity loss and life loss.
What a DC-DC charger adds:
- It applies a multi-stage charge profile suited to the battery chemistry; it really does fill the battery up to the top stage.
- It compensates for the voltage drop along the line and holds the target charge voltage even over long cable distances.
- It protects the alternator by limiting the charge current.
- On most models it works together with a solar input, bringing two sources under a single management.
From the levelling point of view the result is direct: a weak battery means a slow or incompletely moving jack. When the voltage drops the motors draw more current, the current protection and timeout control of the GRV485 may trip early and automatic levelling can stop before it is complete. A service battery that fills up over the journey means levelling that completes on the first attempt on arrival. If you use lead-acid/AGM, aim to stay above the 50% discharge limit; DC-DC charging makes hitting that target markedly easier.
