What are the symptoms of poor grounding?
The classic symptoms of poor grounding: lights dimming when the load comes on, the device resetting only under heavy load, a voltage that looks normal with no load collapsing under load, and noise wandering onto signal lines. The definitive test is a voltage drop measurement under load; a drop above 0.5 V on the chassis path counts directly as a fault.
A poor ground is more insidious than a broken cable: the circuit works with no load and collapses when real current flows. The typical signs are as follows.
- Load-dependent behaviour: the device is fine with no load and resets or reports an error when a motor or valve comes on.
- Stray path: the current tries to return through some other metal part instead of the real ground; an unrelated lamp starts flickering.
- Instability: the fault comes and goes with temperature, vibration or rain; the resistance of a corroded connection is variable.
- False reading: the ohmmeter shows the connection as good. A corroded contact is conductive at microamperes and insulating at 20 amperes; that is why a resistance measurement is not reliable for diagnosing a poor ground.
The correct method is measuring DC voltage across the terminals while the circuit is under load. Treat below 0.2 V as good, 0.2-0.5 V as the borderline that must be cleaned and retightened, and above 0.5 V as a fault. On the chassis cable running from the battery negative to the engine block the target is below 0.2 V, and on a good chassis path it is 0.05 V. If the measured difference is large, follow the sequence: lug, bolt surface, conductor cross-section.
