Is it essential to take the negative directly from the battery rather than the chassis?

For low-current devices that are insensitive to noise, a clean chassis point is enough. For sensitive loads such as high-current drivers, measurement circuits or radio remote control receivers, taking the negative directly from the battery makes a clear difference. The decision is made by measurement: if the drop measured across the chassis under load exceeds 0.2 V, a direct battery connection is needed.

The chassis of a vehicle is not a perfect conductor but a shared path through which other consumers also pass current. This sharing produces two problems: the voltage dropped across the chassis resistance is subtracted from the supply voltage of the device, and the ripple across that same resistance moves the signal reference around.

Make the decision by measurement, not by intuition: if the value you read with a multimeter between the battery negative and the device negative terminal while the device draws full load exceeds 0.2 V, the chassis path is inadequate.
