Should I fit a separate fuse on the receiver supply?
Yes. Fitting a separate fuse or miniature circuit breaker of suitable rating in the receiver supply line is standard good practice. That way only the control line is isolated in a short circuit, the fault point is found quickly, and the receiver's power can be safely cut from a single point during servicing. Confirm from the user manual whether the receiver has an internal fuse.
A separate fuse has three benefits:
- Selective protection: a short circuit in the control line does not blow the main fuse and stop the whole panel.
- Service safety: only the receiver line can be left de-energised during maintenance. This is particularly important in installations supplied with 220V AC.
- Fault diagnosis: a blown fuse directly shows which branch the fault is on.
Application advice: choose the fuse according to the current the receiver draws; a rating larger than necessary reduces the protection value. Supply the receiver from the control line, not from the motor power line; the voltage dip during motor starts can reset the receiver. On DC supply, check the polarity and label the terminals.
In addition to the fuse, in very noisy environments adding a ferrite ring on the supply line and, if needed, a line filter improves stability. In outdoor installations with a risk of lightning or long cable runs, a surge protection device on the supply line should be considered.
