What do SAROZ's speed and torque adjustments do, and how are they calibrated?
The speed adjustment limits how quickly the rudder turns, the torque adjustment limits how much force the motor will apply. Both are calibrated during installation according to the character of the rudder. The soft start and stop profile reduces the impact loads on the rudder bearing and the gear.
Because the same system can be connected to very different rudder mechanisms, these two limits are the most important step of the installation.
- Speed limit: if left too high, a small command produces an excessive rudder angle and the boat zigzags while under way. When it is lowered, the same lever angle gives a finer movement; this is decisive when berthing.
- Torque limit: limits the force the system will apply. When set correctly, the motor does not force when a mechanical obstruction is met; this protects both the rudder mechanism and the driver.
- Soft start and stop: softens the sudden load at the beginning and end of the movement, reducing the impact on the rudder bearing and the gear.
A practical calibration approach: with the boat moored and at low speed, turn the rudder from lock to lock a few times and raise the limits step by step; when you see straining noise, heating or excessively fast turning, back off one step. The first trial must be done in a safe area.
