What does a set with a joystick give you, and can a joystick be added later?
The wired joystick lets you give rudder movement steplessly and in measured doses; the amount of movement changes with the lever angle, so fine corrections can be made when berthing and manoeuvring. The joystick is included in both the 12V and the 24V sets currently listed, and it connects to the driver module through a serial socket.
The joystick and the remote control serve different jobs in the same system:
- Joystick (at the helm): stepless, measured command. Inside a harbour, when coming alongside a pier and in tight manoeuvres, the rudder needs to be corrected little by little; the joystick is for that.
- Remote control (on deck): for giving port-starboard commands while away from the helm. It is used in single-handed fishing while dealing with nets and lines.
Both of the listed sets come with a joystick, so you do not need to buy a joystick separately. The joystick connects to the driver module through a serial socket; this simplifies the wiring during installation.
The sets also include speed and torque adjustment and a soft start and stop profile; the joystick's fine control gains meaning together with these settings, because when the upper speed limit is lowered the same lever angle produces a finer movement.
