How large should the joystick center deadband be, and what happens if it is too narrow?

The joystick deadband is the small range around center in which the lever produces no command at all. Its purpose is to prevent vibration, sensor noise, and the natural shake of the operator's hand from producing unwanted motion. If it is left too wide, fine approach is lost; if left too narrow, the machine twitches on its own at idle.

When setting the deadband you move between two mistakes:

A good setting keeps the deadband wide enough to cover the sensor's noise amplitude and narrow enough not to be one step wider. Rather than shrinking the deadband, reducing noise at its source is the more correct approach: cable shielding, clean supply, and solid mechanical mounting.

Filtering is part of the same equation. Heavy filtering suppresses noise but adds delay to the command and makes the lever feel sluggish. Shrinking the deadband and lightening the filter noticeably improves response without degrading control.

Contactless Hall effect joysticks have an advantage here: because they do not wear like mechanical potentiometers, the deadband does not grow over time.
