How should cable be secured on a vibrating vehicle?
On a vibrating vehicle the cable is secured so that its weight does not rest on the connector and the terminal. In practice it is recommended to fix it at 15-20 cm intervals, to use a rubber grommet or conduit where it passes sharp edges, and to leave a free loop in cable running to moving parts. Placing a fixing point right after the connector prevents fatigue fracture.
The bulk of cable faults occur not in the conductor itself but at transition points where stress concentrates: the connector exit, behind the lug, the sheet-metal edge and the junction with a moving part.
- Connector protection: fix the cable leaving the connector at the shortest possible distance, in practice within a hand's width. That way the vibration load rests on the clamp rather than on the connector pins.
- Fixing interval: there is no binding standard; the common practice in vibrating installations is a 15-20 cm interval. Long free-hanging spans go into resonance.
- Sharp edge: fit a rubber grommet or edge protection on every cable passing through a sheet-metal hole. In the long run this is the most frequent cause of short circuits.
- Moving connection: leave a free loop in cable running to a moving part such as a cab, a lid or a boom; the loop must be planned in the direction of motion and so that it does not twist.
- No overtightening: do not pull a cable tie tight enough to crush the insulation; crushed insulation cracks over time.
- Heat and fluid: choose a route away from exhaust, turbo and hydraulic lines.
Use crimp lugs at the connection; a soldered end fatigues and breaks under vibration at the point where the solder ends.
