Does an inverter (frequency converter) interfere with the remote control?
Yes. The fast switching of inverters produces broadband common mode noise, and the motor cable behaves like an antenna radiating that noise. The most effective and cheapest measure is distance: move the receiver and its antenna away from the inverter and the motor cable, and leave at least about 20 cm between power and signal cables.
The inverter output is a square wave with very high edge rates; this means common mode noise extending up to the MHz range. The noise spreads by two routes: radiation from the motor cable, and conduction along the earth/supply line.
The effective measures are as follows:
- Distance: leave at least ≈20 cm (8 inches) between power and control cables running in parallel; make unavoidable crossings at a right angle.
- Shielded motor cable: earth the shield at both ends. This is the correct approach for high frequency noise above 1 MHz; single-end earthing is preferred only for low frequency noise.
- Ferrite ring: fit one at the inverter output and on sensitive control cables. It is the cheapest intervention for reducing common mode noise.
- Line filter: add an EMI/RFI filter at the inverter input and/or output.
- Wiring: carry control signals on twisted pair, run cables by the shortest path, and avoid long routes parallel to large metal surfaces.
- Antenna: place the receiver antenna outside the enclosure, vertically and as far as possible from the inverter.
If the complaint persists, take the receiver's supply from a separate branch rather than the same supply branch as the inverter.
