What is the difference between a steering assist and an autopilot?
A steering assist amplifies the command you give; it reduces the arm force needed to turn the rudder and the course decision stays with the human. An autopilot, on the other hand, holds a course using compass or GPS data and calculates and corrects deviation itself. The SAROZ K.E.V.2 is a steering assist; its system has no compass, GPS, course or waypoint function.
Even though the two systems produce torque in the same place, their decision mechanisms are completely different.
- Steering assist: the input comes from the human. A port-starboard command is given with a remote control or joystick, and the system converts this command into motor torque. When the command stops, the movement stops. Responsibility for navigation lies with the skipper.
- Autopilot: uses a compass or GPS, generally together with a rudder angle sensor. It maintains the target course itself, calculating and correcting for wind and current drift; it continues navigating without skipper input.
The SAROZ K.E.V.2 does not have a compass, GPS receiver, waypoint management, automatic navigation or rudder angle feedback. The automatic steering statements appearing in some descriptions of the product family are misleading; there is no such function in the kit, and straight course holding is only an optional integration subject that is evaluated separately.
