Can I mount the servo motor close to the turbo or the exhaust?
No, avoid mounting it directly close to the turbo and the exhaust manifold. No operating temperature range is declared in the product data for the GS740 and GS740-3P; in general, engine bay electronics are designed for a typical ambient temperature of 110 °C, while vibration tests are carried out in the 10 Hz-2000 Hz band under ISO 16750-3. Mount the servo on the chassis or on a solid carrier.
Two environmental factors are decisive:
- Temperature: the area around the exhaust manifold and the turbo is the hottest region of the engine bay. The great majority of electronic failures are temperature related. Stay away from hot surfaces and use a heat shield if necessary.
- Vibration: on top of the engine block is where vibration is highest. Automotive vibration tests are typically carried out in the 10 Hz-2000 Hz band; the acceleration levels vary with the mounting point.
Mounting recommendations:
- Attach the servo to the chassis or the machine body, if possible with vibration-isolating mounts.
- Use a rigid bracket instead of a thin sheet-metal console; the most frequently seen failure is a sheet-metal console cracking.
- Keep the cable routing away from hot surfaces; the sheath hardens with heat and friction increases.
- Fix the cables with hook-and-loop straps and prevent them from rubbing against moving parts.
Related note: the manufacturer's temperature range of the AS5600 sensor used in the GS740-3P is -40 °C ... +125 °C; however this is the value of a single component, not the declared operating range of the kit.
