Can I wash an IP67 remote with pressurised water?
No. According to IEC 60529, IP67 denotes the 30 minute immersion test at 1 m depth in still water; it does not cover the pressurised water jet test. Jet resistance is a separate rating (IPX5/IPX6), and if both are required a dual rating such as IP66/IP67 is declared. Clean the remote by wiping it with a damp cloth.
This is one of the most costly misunderstandings in the field. The second digit of the IP code is not a ladder; the figure 7 does not include 5 and 6.
- IPX7 test: the device is immersed in still water, 1 m depth, 30 minutes. The pressure is static and equal from every direction.
- IPX5/IPX6 test: a water jet from a nozzle is applied directly to the housing from a given distance. The pressure is localised and directional.
The difference emerges where the seal is stressed. A directional jet can lift the lip of a seal or push a button membrane inwards and let water through; this stress does not occur in the immersion test. That is why a device being IP67 does not mean it will withstand a high pressure washing gun.
The correct cleaning method:
- Wipe with a damp cloth and, if necessary, a mild detergent.
- Do not use solvents, thinners or abrasive cleaners; they damage the seal and the button membrane.
- Keep the charging connector and seal seats dry and clean; do not leave water in the AXI-Link charging port of the ST100/ST200.
- Periodically check the tightness of the cover screws and cable glands; a loose gland effectively eliminates the IP protection.
