Can detergent or chemicals be used when cleaning solar panels?
The basic method is pure water and a soft brush. Harsh, acidic or alkaline chemicals and abrasive pads damage the anti-reflective coating on the glass and the loss is permanent. For oily dirt, only products approved for panels with a neutral pH should be used, followed by rinsing with demineralised water.
Panel glass is not just glass; there is a thin anti-reflective coating on it that increases output. The choice of chemicals is built on protecting this coating.
- Do not use: abrasive powder cleaners, solvent-based products, strong acid or alkaline chemicals, metal and hard plastic scrapers, abrasive pads.
- Basic method: demineralised water with a soft bristle brush. At most sites this is sufficient.
- For stubborn oil and soot dirt: only products approved for photovoltaic modules with a neutral pH; full rinsing with pure water after application is essential.
- Timing: do not apply chemicals while the panel is hot; rapid evaporation creates a risk of staining and thermal shock. Early morning or evening hours are preferred.
