Type-B2 Standard
In the classification of machinery safety standards, this is the group of standards giving requirements for specific safety devices. The standard for wireless control systems falls into this class and is applied on top of the general requirements relating to the electrical equipment of machinery.
Machinery safety standards are thought of at three levels. The group giving basic concepts and design principles sits at the top. The second level addresses specific safety topics or devices and is itself divided into two: those addressing a safety aspect and those addressing specific safety devices. The third level gives detailed requirements specific to a single machine type.
- The device-specific group covers headings such as two-hand control devices, interlocking devices, pressure-sensitive protective equipment and wireless control systems.
- If a machine-specific standard exists and brings a different provision on a topic, that provision takes precedence over the more general standard.
- Device-specific standards do not on their own make the machine compliant; they only satisfy the requirements for the device concerned.
The practical consequence is this: using a remote control compliant with the wireless control standard does not exempt you from the other requirements applicable to the crane's electrical equipment and control devices.
