Tilt Resolution
Tilt resolution is the smallest angular difference the system can distinguish, and it sets the final error achievable in levelling. On the KTS200 the levelling accuracy is given as 0.025°. That value corresponds to a height difference of about 1.3 mm end to end on a body 3 metres long.
When the angle is small, the deviation is approximately the radian equivalent of the angle multiplied by the length. 0.025° is about 0.000436 radians; over a distance of 3 m that means a height difference of ≈1.3 mm, and over 6 m ≈2.6 mm.
- An error of this order cannot be seen with a bubble spirit level; the bubble is already dead centre.
- By contrast, the tolerance of tilt-sensitive equipment is usually of the order of degrees. In other words, a 0.025° target means staying well inside the tolerance limit.
Do not think of resolution apart from mechanical reality: tyre pressure, suspension settling, the water tank emptying and the temperature change through the day easily move the vehicle by this much. That is why the last digit on the numeric display moving about is normal. In practice the meaning is this: the system leaves you not near the tolerance limit but well below it; even the small shifts through the day will not carry you outside tolerance.
