Tilt Calibration
Tilt calibration is the removal in software of the angular deviation that inevitably occurs when the sensor is mounted on the vehicle. The difference between the sensor body and the true floor plane of the vehicle is a fixed offset; calibration measures this offset and subtracts it from every reading. Without it the system measures correctly but levels to the wrong plane.
A tilt sensor measures the angle its own body makes with the horizontal, not that of your vehicle. Even if the mounting surface is tilted by a few tenths of a degree, the system reads a value different from zero when the vehicle is level. Calibration records this difference as a fixed offset.
- When calibrating, the vehicle must genuinely be level against a known reference plane. Measure in two axes with a good digital inclinometer.
- If you have removed the sensor, changed its position or the mounting has worked loose, the calibration must be repeated.
- The water tank level and the load distribution move the body somewhat through the suspension; calibrating at a typical travelling load gives a more consistent result.
On the KTS200 this function is provided by the tare (reference zeroing) function. After calibration the zero shown by the device must coincide with the zero of the spirit level under your feet; if it does not, the reference plane has been taken wrongly.
