Technical Specification
A technical specification is the reference document in which the electrical, mechanical and functional properties expected from the product are defined as measurable items. It turns the output of the requirements analysis into testable lines such as "12–24 V DC, 15 A continuous, −10/+60 °C" and becomes the common text both parties rely on.
The distinguishing feature of a good specification is that every line can be verified with a measuring instrument. "High current capability" is not a specification item; "15 A continuous at 25 °C ambient, 30 A for 10 seconds" is an item.
- Electrical section: voltage range, continuous and peak current, idle consumption, protection thresholds.
- Interface section: input types, output types, communication interface and speed, connector pin order.
- Environmental section: operating and storage temperature, vibration, expected protection class.
- Behaviour section: power-up sequence, output state in the event of a fault, setting parameters and their limits.
The specification is at the same time the source of the acceptance criteria: every measurement to be checked at sample approval comes out of this document. Every new expectation added later is handled as a specification revision, not verbally. This discipline puts an end from the outset to the "this is not what I asked for" argument in the field.
