Single-Point Grounding

Joining all the negative returns in the system at one common reference point rather than at different places on the chassis. This way no potential difference forms between devices and the return currents do not shift each other's signal reference. It is the preferred arrangement in low-frequency analogue and control circuits.

The chassis is not a perfect conductor; the large currents flowing through it produce differences of the order of millivolts from point to point. If every device connects its negative terminal to the nearest piece of sheet metal, these differences end up between the devices' references.

In installations where several electronic units sit on the same vehicle, such as tractor lift kits, crane remote controls and RV levelling systems, this arrangement prevents the bulk of unexplained noise and false sensor reading problems.
