Reversible Installation
This is carrying out the installation without cutting, drilling or permanently altering the vehicle's original parts. When the added system is removed, the machine returns to its original way of working. The existing wiring harness is not cut, connections are made with intermediate connectors, and the removed original parts are kept.
Reversibility is not just a convenience, it is a design choice that limits risk. Even if the system fails or the machine is sold, the vehicle does not become unusable; the manual control path has not been eliminated.
In practice it corresponds to a few concrete habits:
- Not cutting cables: if it is necessary to tap into the existing harness, an intermediate connector is used. A cable that is cut and spliced both makes reversal harder and becomes a source of contact problems over time.
- Not drilling new holes: existing bolts and mounting points are used as far as possible; clamps and bolted brackets are preferred.
- Keeping the removed parts: an original part replaced by a new module is not thrown away, it is kept together with the machine.
- Separate fuse and switch: the added system is supplied through its own protection element; this way it can be disabled with a single action.
- Documentation: photograph the parts you removed and the cable colours, and record with a drawing which point was connected how.
This discipline has two practical benefits: in case of a fault the added system can be disabled and the source of the problem quickly isolated, and when the machine changes hands it can be returned to its original condition. It is also the preferred method in terms of second-hand value and warranty disputes.
In terms of vehicle legislation, changes falling within the scope of chassis, brakes, steering, cabin or equipment addition require a modification project; to determine whether the added system falls within this scope, it is necessary to consult an inspection station or an authorised engineer.
