Operator Training
It is the process in which the person who will use the wireless remote control learns the channel-to-movement mapping, the stopping behaviour and the discipline of storing the device. Its difference from a wired control is that the operator can stand away from the machine, and that this freedom creates new risks.
Training falls under three headings, and doing it together with the commissioning test is the most efficient way.
- Mapping knowledge: which button performs which movement in which direction. The channel-to-movement assignment must be labelled the same way both in the panel and on the transmitter, and the operator must verify it with a no-load trial.
- Stopping reflex: that stopping the movement means releasing the button, where the hard-wired emergency stop is located, and how the machine behaves on signal loss.
- Device discipline: putting the transmitter into its passive position at the end of the shift, storing it in a locked place, a routine for charging or battery replacement, and checking the housing and seals after a drop.
The most critical habit that must be explained is the operator's position: because the remote control is portable, it is physically possible to walk under the load or into the path of movement. Explicitly prohibiting this behaviour in training is the most important organisational measure when moving to a wireless system.
