Operating Temperature Range
The ambient temperature range over which the device delivers its declared performance. On rechargeable handheld units the limit is set not by the electronics but by the lithium-polymer cell: according to general engineering data typical operation is 0-40 °C and charging 0-45 °C. Outside these limits capacity drops and the cell may be permanently damaged.
In lithium cells low temperature raises the internal resistance; usable capacity drops, and charging below 0 °C leads to metallic lithium plating on the anode, permanently weakening the cell. High temperature, on the other hand, accelerates chemical ageing: for the same number of cycles the capacity loss is greater.
- Winter site: keep the remote control in a heated environment between shifts; do not put a unit coming in from the cold on charge before it approaches room temperature.
- Summer site: if the unit is left in the sun or inside a vehicle its surface temperature rises far above ambient; store it in the shade.
- On an alkaline-cell unit: there is no charging limit, but capacity again drops noticeably in the cold; carrying spare cells solves the problem immediately.
