Oil Temperature Management
This is the job of keeping hydraulic oil temperature within the operating band. On mobile systems, 40-60 °C is typically targeted; above 80 °C the oil's oxidation rate increases markedly, viscosity drops, and the life of elastomer seals shortens rapidly.
The source of heat is simple: every watt in the system that is not converted into useful work ends up heating the oil. Flow returning through the relief valve, pressure drop in narrow lines, and pump losses are the largest shares.
- Signs of overheating: the smell of the oil and its color darkening, motions slowing as the day goes on, seals starting to leak.
- First things to check: tank oil level, whether the cooler core is blocked, a throttled or misadjusted relief valve, a clogged filter.
- A small tank volume and a cooler covered in dirt are the two most common causes in summer months.
From a proportional control standpoint, temperature acts through two channels: the change in viscosity shifts the flow characteristic, and rising coil resistance lowers the current. That is why a machine behaving differently in the morning and in the afternoon is the most familiar indicator of a temperature management problem.
