Joystick Center Deadzone
A software band around the lever center in which no command is generated even if the signal moves slightly. It prevents the machine from twitching in neutral due to vibration, sensor noise, and natural hand tremor; it is typically set to two to five percent of full lever travel.
Unlike mechanical deadband, this band is defined in the controller software and can be adjusted as desired. Its purpose is simple: to guarantee that the system produces exactly zero command when the lever is released.
- If set too narrow, machine vibration or a hand resting on the lever produces unwanted small movements. Under heavy load this is a serious safety problem.
- If set too wide, the usable travel of the lever shortens, precise positioning becomes harder, and the operator feels that motion starts late.
- The band is usually set symmetrically; if asymmetry is needed, the reason is generally that the lever's mechanical center has shifted, and that should be corrected first.
AXI's wireless proportional joysticks are built around motion stopping when the lever is not touched; in addition, if the signal is lost the motor returns to the safe center position within 250 ms and oil flow stops. The deadzone covers vibration and the timeout covers loss of communication; the two close off different risks.
