ISO 13850 (Emergency Stop Design Principles)
The standard setting out the design principles of the emergency stop function. It requires the red actuator and yellow background colour code, a manually reset latching arrangement, the stop overriding all other functions, and reset not starting motion.
The standard's starting point is that emergency stop is a complementary measure: actual safety is provided by guards, interlocks and correct design; emergency stop comes into play when those are not enough.
The basic principles:
- Override: the emergency stop command overrides all other commands and is maintained for as long as it remains active.
- Latching: when the actuator is pressed it holds its position, and the stop is not removed until it is reset by hand.
- Reset: the reset operation only permits restarting, it does not start motion.
- Accessibility: it must be easily reachable from every operator station.
- Choice of category: only stop category 0 or 1 may be used.
The critical distinction with a wireless remote control is this: a stop command given over the radio does not automatically take the place of the fixed, hard-wired emergency stop device on site. Also provide a hard-wired emergency stop on the machine and route the receiver's control voltage through that circuit.
