Immersion Test (IPX7 Immersion Test)
The second-digit 7 condition of IEC 60529: the enclosure is held in still water at 1 metre depth for 30 minutes and no harmful quantity of water must have entered. The pressure is constant and there is no flow; for that reason it says nothing about jet resistance.
In the test the sample is submerged so that its highest point is at least 150 mm below the surface and its lowest point at least 1000 mm deep, and it is held there for 30 minutes. The load is a constant hydrostatic pressure; even compression of the gasket all around the perimeter is enough to meet this load.
- What it proves: accident scenarios such as the remote control falling into standing water or being under water for a short time.
- What it does not prove: directional, high-pressure flow from a nozzle, continuous immersion (that is IPX8) and contact with hot or chemically dosed water.
- Life effect: the test is carried out on a new product. An enclosure that has been dropped on site, aged in the sun and opened and closed many times may not give the same result.
The practical conclusion is this: an LT200 remote control or outdoor receiver declared IP67 may get wet, but clean it with a damp cloth and do not deliberately leave the enclosure under water.
