Hydraulic Oil Heating
This is hydraulic power being converted into heat because the flow delivered by the pump returns to the tank through the relief valve or bypass without doing any work. As the oil heats up, viscosity drops and internal leakage increases; the hitch drops faster under load, responses slow down, and seal and gasket life is shortened.
The most common cause of heating is the control lever being pushed past the transport position and left in the continuous pumping zone. Besides that, a blocked filter, low oil level and a relief valve that has drifted out of adjustment produce the same result.
- Excessive heating of the hydraulic housing after a long road transport is a typical symptom.
- Depth repeatability suffers with hot oil; morning and afternoon measurements do not agree.
- Always check the oil level at the position and temperature stated by the manufacturer.
The electronic retrofit kit neither creates nor solves this problem, but the installation setting affects it. On the LFT20 and LFT54, if the cable tension is set so that it keeps the lever permanently pulled, the tractor unknowingly stays in the continuous pumping zone. For that reason, after installation, visually confirm that the lever returns fully to neutral while the kit is idle.
