ETSI Harmonised Standard

A harmonised standard is a technical reference text that can be followed to meet the essential requirements of a directive; applying it creates a presumption of conformity. On the radio side, the EN 300 220 series is used for sub-GHz short range devices, EN 300 328 for 2.4 GHz, and the EN 301 489 series for electromagnetic compatibility.

Harmonised standards are not mandatory; a manufacturer may meet the requirements by other means. However, when you apply a standard published in the official list, you are presumed to have met the relevant essential requirements and the process becomes predictable.

There is no need to memorise this in the field; when you need it, looking at the product's declaration of conformity is enough. Since this document is requested in corporate procurement and when compiling a machine's technical file, asking the supplier for it up front shortens the process.
