Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
Design for manufacturability is making the layout, pad and test point decisions at the design stage so that the board can be produced on the assembly line without defects and repeatably. The aim is to make a board that works correctly electrically also producible at the same quality every time.
The typical DFM decisions in practice are these:
- Component spacing: enough clearance is left between parts for the placement head and, if needed, for rework; a cramped layout increases the risk of solder bridging.
- Pad dimensions: the manufacturer's recommendation is followed; a small pad gives a weak solder joint, while a large pad can cause the part to shift.
- Orientation consistency: having parts of the same type face the same direction makes a wrongly oriented part catchable even by eye during optical inspection.
- Test access: test points are gathered on a single side, so that the fixture contacts from one side only.
- Enclosure fit: board holes, connector heights and enclosure openings are checked together.
These decisions are free at the prototype stage; after series production has started, the same corrections mean a new board revision, a new stencil and a new fixture. That is why the first prototype assembly is assessed with an eye to both function and manufacturability.
