Control Layout Ergonomics
Planning the position of the buttons on the transmitter so that it is consistent with the direction of motion and with the operator's stance. A wrong mapping increases the risk of pressing the wrong direction in situations where a decision must be made within seconds. EN 13557 is the standard that covers these design requirements for crane control devices.
Ergonomics here is not a matter of comfort but of error margin. The operator does not look at the remote control while watching the load; the hand moves trusting memory. For that reason the physical layout of the buttons must overlap with the direction of the motion on the machine.
Four rules that are easy to apply during commissioning:
- Spatial consistency: let the upper button give the upward motion and the lower one the downward motion; the left button to the left, the right button to the right.
- Channel-motion label: write permanently not technical names such as CH1-CH2 but function names such as "HOIST / LOWER".
- The operator's reference direction: if the machine's "forward" direction differs from the direction the operator is facing, this distinction must be explained clearly in training.
- Separation against wrong presses: critical functions (brake, lock) must be placed physically away from the frequently used direction buttons.

When the mapping changes, update the labels too; a remote control running with an old label is riskier than one with no label at all.
