Continuous Power and Peak Power
These are two separate figures on an inverter label. Continuous power is the output the device can deliver for hours; peak power is the limit that can only be sustained for a few seconds and serves to cover the sudden demand of motor starts. The peak figure is typically given at around twice the continuous figure.
The reason for the distinction is physical. What sets continuous power is the ability of the semiconductors and the transformer in the power stage to dissipate heat. What sets peak power is the instantaneous current capability; since heat has not yet built up, the device can deliver much more for a short time.
Two questions must be answered together when choosing. First, what is the total continuous consumption of the devices that will run at the same time. Second, is there an electric motor among them; because an induction motor demands several times its rated power at start-up. A compressor refrigerator may be drawing 100 W, but its demand at the moment of start-up is much higher.
Choosing by looking only at peak power is a common mistake: you see a big number on the label, but the device cannot deliver that figure beyond a few seconds. In an RV the right method is to choose continuous power somewhat above the real total load and to keep the peak margin in reserve for motor loads.
