Connector Terminal Back-Out
Terminal back-out is a terminal in the connector housing escaping from its retaining tab, sliding backwards and failing to make full contact with the mating pin. The socket looks plugged in and sound from outside while the circuit works intermittently. Vibration, tensile force on the cable and a badly inserted pin are the main causes.
As the terminal enters the housing it passes over the tab and seats in place, usually with a faint click. A pin left without that sound is only half seated; it slides back with the first pull or with vibration. The same result occurs on connectors with a locking wedge if the wedge was not fitted.
- Symptom: the device works when you press the socket by hand and cuts out when you let go.
- Check: pull each core back gently one by one; a core that moves is a backed-out pin.
- Prevention: clamp the harness 10–15 cm behind the connector to take the pulling force off the pins.
This fault is the most insidious member of the intermittent contact family: everything looks normal in a static measurement, and it shows up once the vehicle runs and starts to vibrate. During diagnosis, always do the core pull check before unplugging the connector; if the pin seats itself when you unplug it, the fault temporarily disappears and the real cause cannot be found.
