Centre of Gravity (In an RV)
The centre of gravity is the position at which the total mass of the vehicle is assumed to be concentrated at a single point. Its longitudinal position determines the split between axle load and drawbar nose load, while its height determines the tendency to roll over and to sway. The loading arrangement moves this point directly.
The position of the centre of gravity relative to the axle determines how much of the mass rests on the axle and how much on the drawbar. As the centre moves closer to the axle the nose load decreases; if it passes behind the axle the nose load can even turn negative, which is a dangerous condition.
- Longitudinal rule: place the heaviest items level with the axle or just in front of it, close to the floor.
- Vertical rule: do not put heavy items in the overhead lockers; as the height increases the roll-over moment grows.
- Lateral rule: distribute the load evenly left and right; piling it on one side increases the tyre and jack load on that side.
It also has a meaning for levelling: the jacks on the side towards which the centre of gravity shifts carry a larger share. Base the capacity assessment not on the average load but on the worst distribution. When you change the loading arrangement it is normal to see a small shift on the inclination display; the suspension settles according to the new distribution.
