Bidirectional Communication
In bidirectional communication the receiver can also transmit like a transmitter; the remote control does not only send commands, it also receives status from the other side. This structure is the precondition for acknowledgement, session authentication and telemetry feedback. None of these is possible in a one-way system.
In a one-way remote control the flow of information goes only from the remote to the machine. In a bidirectional system both ends are both transmitter and receiver, and a session is established between them.
- Session authentication: when the connection is established the two sides confirm each other's identity; it becomes harder for another transmitter to break in.
- Status feedback: link quality, error status and battery level can be shown on the remote control.
- Resource management: if the receiver is busy or the channel is occupied, the transmitter can learn this and change its behaviour.
The price is a full transceiver on both ends and higher consumption; also, since there is two-way traffic on the channel, the transmission budget and channel occupancy must be managed more carefully. On the AXI side, the XRF protocol of the HCT400 and HCT402 sets works with bidirectional acknowledgement and session authentication; for the SAROZ K.E.V.2 remote control the expression bidirectional RF protocol is also used.
