Axle Load
Axle load is the mass resting on a single axle and is stated together with its maximum value on the manufacturer's plate. Even if the total mass of the caravan is below the limit, a single axle can exceed its limit if the load is gathered towards the front or the rear. Tyre, brake and bearing sizing is based on this value.
The total mass is the sum of the axle loads and the noseweight. As the loading arrangement changes, this share shifts: piling luggage at the rear of the vehicle increases the axle load while reducing the noseweight, and piling it at the front does the opposite.
- Measurement: you learn the real value only on a weighbridge; calculation is an estimate.
- If exceeded: the tyres run above their design load, heat up and the blow-out risk increases; brake and bearing life shortens.
- Legal dimension: the maximum axle load on the plate may not be exceeded, independently of the total mass.
Retrofitted equipment such as a levelling system enters this calculation too. Because the jacks are placed on the chassis ahead of and behind the axle, their weight is reflected in the axle load and the noseweight in different proportions. After having new equipment fitted, taking the vehicle loaded onto a weighbridge and verifying both the total mass and the axle load is the safest route.
