AS5600 Magnetic Encoder
The AS5600 is a 12-bit resolution magnetic angle sensor that measures the angle of a diametric magnet on the shaft end without contact; it divides 360 degrees into 4096 steps. Its operating temperature is between −40 and +125 degrees. On the GS740-3P the actuator position feedback is taken with this sensor.
The sensor detects the direction of the field created by the magnet with Hall elements on its surface and produces the angle digitally. Since there is no mechanical contact, there is no part that rubs, wears or gets dirty.
- Its advantage over potentiometer feedback: the measurement is not corrupted under dust, vibration, oil and moisture; carbon track wear and the resulting jumpy readings disappear.
- Its requirement: the magnet must be on the shaft axis and at the correct distance from the sensor. A magnet off the axis produces angle error.
On the GS740-3P this measurement gives the closed-loop P controller the actual position information: the 0–3.3 V command from the potentiometer is compared with the position read by the encoder, and the difference is closed with a soft ramp. Important: this loop is on actuator position, not on engine speed; it does not hold the speed constant under load.
