Actuator Current Limit

The highest current the actuator is allowed to draw; when it is exceeded, drive is cut. On the GS740-3P drilling system this limit comes with a factory setting of about 7 A and can be configured between 3.5 A and 10 A. The limit protects both the servo motor and the wiring in strain and stall conditions.

The current limit does two separate jobs at once. In normal operation the friction of the cable and the spring force of the throttle lever create a certain current range; the limit is chosen so as to leave a margin above that. In an abnormal condition the limit protects the winding and the driver stage by limiting the current of a stalled motor.

The meaning of the configuration range is this: a low limit (towards 3.5 A) gives more sensitive protection, but on an installation with high friction the system may cut out unnecessarily. A high limit (towards 10 A) keeps working on demanding mechanics but catches a genuine jam late. The right approach is to fix the mechanics before raising the limit; on an installation that constantly draws 7 A the problem is not in the setting but in the routing.

These values apply to the GS740-3P. Since there is no current limit declaration for the single-channel GS740, these figures should not be attributed to that product.
