Active Stop (ATS)
This is a stop function started automatically when no valid signal is detected at the receiver. The supervision time is declared by the manufacturer and is determined by the risk assessment for the machine; in wireless remote control applications this time is expected not to exceed roughly 0.5 seconds.
The difference between active stop and passive stop is the decision mechanism. In a passive stop the output drops because no command arrives. In an active stop the receiver recognises this as a fault and starts a defined stop behaviour: it takes the outputs to a safe state, gives a brake signal if required, and does not resume the movement by itself even if communication returns.
- The shorter the time, the shorter the stopping distance; but a time that is too short produces unnecessary stops during moments of interference.
- The time is part of a total chain that includes not only the radio side but also the contactor drop-out time and the brake response time.
- When communication returns, a new operator command is awaited before movement starts.
